LOCATION & VISITATION

Saint Joseph Cemetery, under the patronage of the carpenter/foster father of Jesus Christ, is located just nine miles from Oakland and seventeen miles from San Francisco. West of Interstate 80, the cemetery is reached by taking the El Portal exit from the Interstate.

HISTORY & FACILITIES

Saint Joseph Cemetery was established by the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 1914. Historic Saint Paul Church, founded in 1864, is located very near the cemetery. Originally the cemetery was part of a Spanish land grant belonging to Don Francisco Maria Castro.

Saint Joseph Cemetery is a 58-acre property; to date 38 acres have been developed into 21 sections for ground burial. There are numerous developed grave spaces in current inventory.

The first chapel mausoleum was completed in 1928 and dominates the entire cemetery. Built in an Egyptian motif, large Roman columns dominate the central chapel. The original facility was expanded many times and now has a capacity for 4,000 entombments.

In 1980 a second chapel mausoleum was constructed near the entrance of the cemetery. Designed by Aaron Green, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, the facility added spaces for another 1600 entombments. Indoor niches for cremated remains were included in this facility.

In addition to the first two mausoleums, a third one was completed and dedicated in 1997. It has provided an additional 1,092 crypt spaces and cremation niches and is enhanced with a chapel in honor of the Good Shepherd.

Over the course of the cemetery’s 84 years of service, over 32,200 committal services have taken place. Saint Joseph Cemetery currently supports the burial needs of 16 parishes of the west Contra Costa County area.

Cemetery Family Service Counselors are available six days a week for both preneed and at-need cemetery and mortuary arrangements.
